Overview

Day 1: Leh to Nubra Valley

Morning: Departure from Leh

  • Start Early: Begin your journey from Leh early in the morning to make the most of the day. The distance to Nubra Valley is approximately 150 km, and the drive can take around 5-6 hours, depending on road conditions.
  • Khardung La Pass: En route, you’ll pass through Khardung La, one of the highest motorable roads in the world. Take a break at the top to enjoy the breathtaking views and snap some photos. Remember, the altitude is high, so keep hydrated and avoid strenuous activities.

Afternoon: Arrival in Nubra Valley

  • Diskit: Your first stop in Nubra Valley is Diskit, home to the Diskit Monastery. The monastery is famous for its 32-meter statue of Maitreya Buddha and offers stunning views of the valley. Spend some time exploring the monastery and learning about its history.

Evening: Hunder and Sand Dunes

  • Hunder Sand Dunes: Head to Hunder, known for its unique cold desert and sand dunes. Enjoy a camel ride on the Bactrian camels, a species native to this region. These double-humped camels offer a unique way to explore the dunes.
  • Parking and Overnight Stay: Park your RV in a designated area near the dunes, ensuring you’re not disturbing the delicate ecosystem. Camping amidst the dunes offers a magical experience under the starlit sky. Many campsites offer basic facilities and a cozy place to rest.

Cost Estimate: At Rs 90/km, the approximate cost for the day’s travel would be around Rs 13,500 for 150 km.

Day 2: Exploring Nubra Valley

Morning: Diskit Monastery and Samstanling Gompa

  • Diskit Monastery: If you didn’t have time to fully explore Diskit Monastery the previous day, consider visiting it again in the morning when it’s quieter. The early light also offers great photography opportunities.
  • Samstanling Gompa: Located in the village of Sumur, Samstanling Gompa is known for its colorful murals and peaceful atmosphere. It’s a great place to learn more about the region’s Buddhist culture and enjoy some quiet reflection.

Afternoon: Panamik Hot Springs

  • Panamik Hot Springs: Head towards Panamik, the northernmost village accessible to tourists in India. The hot springs here are believed to have therapeutic properties and are a perfect place to relax and rejuvenate. The springs are surrounded by stunning mountain scenery, making it a picturesque spot to unwind.

Evening: Return to Hunder or Sumur

  • Stay Option: You can choose to return to Hunder for another night amidst the sand dunes or stay in Sumur, which offers a quieter, more secluded experience. Both locations have campsites and basic accommodations for overnight stays.

Cost Estimate: For a similar distance of around 150 km, expect the day’s travel cost to be about Rs 13,500.

Tips for the Journey

  • Packing Essentials: Bring warm clothing, even in summer, as temperatures can drop significantly at night. Don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for sun protection during the day.
  • Acclimatization: Acclimatize to the altitude to avoid altitude sickness, especially if you’ve recently arrived in Leh.
  • Permits: Ensure you have the necessary Inner Line Permits, which are required for traveling to certain areas in Nubra Valley.

This journey through Ladakh’s stunning landscapes and cultural sites will leave you with unforgettable memories and experiences. Enjoy the serenity and beauty of this unique region!
